There are signs all over STOP ASIAN HATE!
And it gets me thinking and I have feelings and perspectives about MY EXPERIENCES.
There are people for whom I experience the feeling of hate. It's true. I don't hate many, but there are people I hate.
Like a guy I met a few years ago whom I thought was the nicest person, the smartest person...until he told me that he and his family could not speak to me and my family because if he did he would end up in Hell. Seriously.
I hate him. Not so much any more, but I hated him with a vengeance for a couple of years.
What I didn't do was ACT ON MY HATE!
I wanted to. I dreamed about all the emails I could write (I am a writer in these situations, until I become a confronter...talk about Hell). I thought about him and his ilk. And I felt a lot of hate.
I WANTED TO ACT ON MY HATE!
What I think now is that the message is ... HATE HAPPENS.
And emotional intelligence is all about it not being what happens, but how you handle it.
I BELIEVE THAT NOW IS THE TIME TO DISCUSS THAT HATE HAPPENS. IT IS A STRONG FEELING THAT PEOPLE EXPERIENCE. IT IS INSIDE US.
TALK ABOUT HATE, NORMALIZE HATE AS A REAL PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE, AND SHIFT THE CONVERSATION TO:
WHAT DO I DO WHEN I HATE?
Begin with breathing in...breathing out and smiling. It's ok to feel hate. Acting on it in a violent way -- with words, body, weapons (!) -- is NOT OK.
NOW IS THE TIME TO CONSIDER HOW YOU WANT TO USE YOUR ANGER SO THAT YOU ARE A PART OF MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
Get into that conversation deeply in the next Intro to Plan C class
